In motorsports, nutrition and diet don’t get a lot of attention, but they should.
Your ride wouldn’t get you far if you forgot to gas up, right? Well, your body won’t take you anywhere without fuel, either.
The nutritional needs of drivers and riders are unique. They also vary significantly depending on whether it’s arm or leg day, race day or a day or recovery.
Because it’s difficult to consume all the nutrients a racer’s body needs through food alone, targeted supplementation can provide the precise fuel your body needs.
Motorsports Nutrition Needs
To achieve optimal performance, all athletes must consume the right nutrients.
A defensive lineman in the NFL, for instance, has different nutritional needs than a long jumper in track and field. Likewise, professional racers can’t eat like sumo wrestlers and perform well.
Professional drivers, from F1 to NASCAR to FIA, depend on their nutritionists. Everyone’s body is different, and you may have nutritional needs that are different from those of other drivers on your circuit.
Two Phases of Motorsports Diet and Nutrition
For race car drivers, motocross riders and other racing enthusiasts, your daily nutritional needs differ greatly from your race day requirements.
Your normal (nonrace day) diet should generally focus on protein and complex carbs, with limited “good” fats and little or no sugar. Smaller, more frequent meals and lots of hydrating will keep you going.
On race day, avoid fats altogether. Consuming fats increases lipid content in the bloodstream, causing the heart to work harder. Because adrenaline and exertion spike your heart rate anyway, this extra cardiac effort steals your precious energy.
Fiber is another no-no on race day. It’s hard to digest and it can cause bloating, especially if you’ll be sitting behind the wheel for hours. Both fat and fiber can cause gastrointestinal problems, and that’s the last thing you need when you’re focusing on performing on the track or trail.
Race day hydration should come from water, sports drinks or — ideally — coconut water. No coffee the day of the race, as it’s a diuretic that will strip your body of that precious water.
